In my early years I remember singing Once within a Lowly Stable. I was in the children’s choir in
our little church on the corner of Pine Street and Charles. Its sweet and simple melody has always
carried with it the warmth of the Christmas season. Sadly, I don’t hear it sung so much anymore.
As I began the arrangement process I thought of the
lyrics for the piece:
“Once within a lowly
stable
Where
the sheep and oxen lay
A loving mother laid her
baby . . . “
And then to my mind came the realization of who
actually resided within that tiny frame:
King
of Kings
Lord
of Lords
And so, to me, the feeling of this arrangement
oscillates between the tranquil manger scene and the majesty of the Redeemer of
the world. I hope my humble offering brings peace to your heart as you
celebrate the season.
